What is a redirect?

The term “redirect” refers to URL forwarding, which is a mechanism on the World Wide Web (WWW) that guides users and search engines from one URL (web address) to another (destination URL).

For example, if you click on a shortened or non-shortened link, and it directs you to another destination, it is called a redirect.

What is the redirect feature at Linko?

Linko is a link shortening service that offers three (3) different types of redirections for shortened URLs.

  • Direct
  • Splash
  • Link Cloaking (Link Masking)

Custom splash pages and Call-to-Action (CTA) overlays employ the same method of redirection.

Now let’s explain each redirection type with more details and examples.

Direct Redirection

A direct redirection method immediately directs the user without displaying an intermediate page, achieved through a server-side redirect.

When using a direct method to share a link, crawlers will immediately retrieve the target page.

Note: When using or assigning a retargeting pixel to a short link with the direct method for redirection, an unobtrusive intermediary page will briefly appear before the redirection occurs, which is necessary for the pixel’s activation.

Example of a short link with direct redirection:

Link Cloaking Redirection

Link cloaking is a technique often used in affiliate marketing, where the original URL of an affiliate link is hidden behind a more visually appealing and branded link.

This cloaked link, when clicked, redirects to the original URL, making the link more trustworthy and attractive to users.

Note: some websites do not work with this method because of a security rule that forces browsers to hinder iframes.

Example of a short link with link cloaking redirection:

Splash Redirection

A splash page is an intermediary page that is quite beneficial in offering users a glimpse of the website they are about to enter.

It acts as a safeguard, affording users a moment to consider if they wish to proceed or not.

Example of a short link with splash redirection:

Custom Splash Redirection

The custom splash page is a premium feature that enables you to design a promotional page linked to a short URL.

Users who navigate through the custom splash page will briefly encounter the promotional content before being redirected.

Example of a short link with custom splash page:

Call to action (CTA) Overlay Redirection

The CTA overlay is a remarkable feature that enables the use or embedding of a dynamic lead widget into shortened links. It operates on the same concept as iframe or link cloaking techniques, injecting engaging widgets such as popup messages, contact forms, or polls into the shortened link (destination URL).
